Willmar police arrest man after 2-hour standoff
A man was arrested early Sunday morning after a two-hour standoff in Willmar.
At 8:39 p.m. Saturday, a Willmar police officer pulled over a tan Jeep in the 100 block of High Ave Northeast.
As the vehicle stopped, a passenger got out of the car and fled. While fleeing, police say the individual fired one shot at the officer. The officer was not hit and immediately called in for backup.
Officers began tracking the suspect and, at 12:02 a.m., found a detached garage in the 100 block of Ella Ave Northeast.
Using a remote robotic camera, Willmar police confirmed the suspect was in the garage.
With the suspect refusing to comply with officers, a SWAT team was called in and used tear gas to get the suspect in custody around 2:30 a.m.
Police said the suspect, 36-year-old Esteban Ramos Jr., was found to be suffering from various self-inflicted injuries and was transported to Carris Hospital by ambulance. Ramos also had an outstanding federal firearms warrant and an outstanding misdemeanor warrant from Lyon County.
Ramos was treated at the hospital and is now being held in the Kandiyohi County Jail.
Assisting the Willmar Police Department was the Willmar Police Department SWAT team, Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office, Kandiyohi / Meeker SWAT team, Kandiyohi / Meeker STAT (medic) team, Minnesota State Patrol, Benson Police Department and CentraCare EMS.
