What’s open, closed on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Observed Monday, Jan. 18 this year, Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrates the life and achievements of the civil rights leader Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. The holiday was observed in all 50 states for the first time in 1993, according to the Associated Press.
Here is a look at what’s open and closed on the holiday:
Banks: Many banks follow the Federal Reserve schedule and will be closed, including all Bremer Bank, U.S. Bank and Wells Fargo locations.
Driver and Vehicle Services: Services will not be available Monday, Jan. 18, in observance of the day.
Garbage and recycling pick-up: The Downtown Solid Waste customer service office (and information line) and the South Transfer Station will be closed. However there are no changes to other city garbage and recycling pick-ups.
Grocery stores: Most major grocery stores will remain open.
Libraries: Library services won’t be available Monday.
Mail delivery: Mail will not be delivered on Jan. 18 and post offices are closed.
Mass transit: Metro Transit buses and light rail lines will follow regular weekday schedules. Find route information by calling 612-373-3333 or visiting metrotransit.org.
Minneapolis city government offices and Minneapolis 311: Offices will be closed and will resume regular business hours on Tuesday following the holiday.
Parking: Meters will not be enforced in Minneapolis and St. Paul Jan. 18, but all other parking restrictions in the city remain in effect and subject to enforcement, including Park Board meters along Minneapolis parkways, University of Minnesota parking meters and those of private organizations that operate their own meters.
Police, fire emergency services and 911: Are not affected.
Schools: Most area public schools will be closed; administrators advise that those unsure of school closures should call.
