As of late last week, carjackings were up 38% this year in Minneapolis, according to the city’s Public Health and Safety Committee. That doesn’t include a weekend spree that saw six carjackings in a span of five hours Friday night.
The cluster of cases spanned between Hiawatha Avenue, Highway 62, Interstate 35W and Interstate 94. According to police, the cases are still under investigation but one car was recovered and three suspects were taken into custody Friday night.
"Residents are nervous, they are angry, they are frustrated," said resident Mike Galegher.
He says his 10-year-old grandson witnessed one of the crimes.
"He was playing with his friend. He looked over the fence and saw a guy in a white mask with a gun pointed at a woman’s head. He was scared and told me, ‘Grandpa, I don’t want to go out for trick-or-treating,’" Galegher said.
