Police arrested the suspect connected in the homicide investigation after a woman was found dead in Woodbury Friday afternoon.
On Saturday, Woodbury Public Safety announced that law enforcement located 39-year-old McKinley Phillips, the suspect, connected to the killing of the woman inside the Woodbury home.
Phillips was arrested on a Greyhound bus in Monroe County, Wisconsin when police caught up with him early Saturday morning. He was taken into custody without incident, said police.
According to Woodbury Public Safety, dispatchers received a call at 3:42 p.m. on Friday from a person stating that Phillips had just called her and claimed to have killed a woman at a home in Woodbury. Officers were then sent to the home in the 7500 block of Steepleview Road.
The caller also told police that several children were likely in the home, and police called for people inside the home after arriving. At that time, several children of varying ages exited the home when asked, police said.
"The children were unaware and had no idea this had happened. They were upstairs watching movies and the crime happened downstairs," said Commander John Altman with the Woodbury Police Department.
The children reportedly told police Phillips had left earlier in the day and they believed the female victim had gone with him. The kids were then evacuated to a safe location and are being cared for, police said.
SWAT team members then entered the home and found the woman already dead.
The incident remains under investigation. Washington County SWAT, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, Oakdale Police, Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Minneapolis Police, Washington County Attorney’s Office and Cottage Grove Police assisted.
