UPDATE: St. Paul police say 2 taken into custody after shooting directed at officers

Two people are in custody after a shooting believed to be directed at St. Paul police officers.

According to the St. Paul Police Department, officers were alerted of a group of people around 7:30 p.m. were causing a disturbance in the parking lot of a convenience store on the corner of Hazelwood Street and Maryland Avenue E.

Upon arrival, a vehicle traveling westbound on Maryland Avenue E. drove by the officers and fired shots in their direction, according to the police report.

Officers then pursued the suspects as they fled in the vehicle from the scene westbound on Maryland Avenue E. Police say the suspect crashed the vehicle into another vehicle, struck a fire hydrant and utility police before coming to a stop at Duluth Street and Maryland Avenue.

One suspect, a 23-year-old man, ran from the vehicle and was caught by pursuing officers and arrested. Another suspect, a 17-year-old male, remained in the vehicle and was injured as a result of the crash.

St. Paul Fire paramedics transported the teenager to Regions Hospital with injuries not considered to be life-threatening, stating a possible broken leg.

No officers were injured in the incident. A squad car sustained damage and the building behind where the officers were parked was also damaged.

A handgun was located inside the suspect's vehicle.

St. Paul Police Chief Todd Axtell sent an email to the entire department, which said in part, "Right now, I am extremely mad that someone brazenly shot in the direction of our officers," and added, "I'm going to call the county attorney to ask for the most serious charges possible."

The incident remains under investigation.
