UPDATE: Child dies from injuries sustained in crash following police pursuit of murder suspect

UPDATE: The murder suspect who was being pursued by police before a fatal crash has been identified as Hakeem Waheed Muhammed, a 28-year-old Minneapolis man, according to the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office.

Muhammed remains hospitalized after being arrested at the scene of the crash. The sheriff’s office says he had an active warrant for murder before the crash.


PREVIOUS COVERAGE: The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office says a 6-year-old girl died from injuries sustained in a crash following a high-speed police pursuit Friday night.

The Brooklyn Center Police Department says officers were pursuing a murder suspect when the suspect vehicle struck an unrelated vehicle at the intersection of 53rd and Humboldt avenues.

That vehicle contained the 6-year-old girl and four other passengers.

A 15-year-old girl, who was also in the unrelated vehicle, remains hospitalized. Authorities say the other passengers have been released from the hospital.

The murder suspect was taken into police custody and remains hospitalized as of Saturday afternoon, according to the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office.

Police say at one point, an officer relayed to dispatch that the suspect was traveling 70 mph in a 30 mph zone.

The investigation is ongoing.
