UPDATE: BCA identifies officer, man shot in downtown Duluth officer-involved shooting

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says an officer shot through an apartment door at an unarmed man while responding to a report of a domestic disturbance Saturday in Duluth.
According to the BCA, officer Tyler Leibfried, who has been with the Duluth Police Department for five years, has been placed on administrative leave. The BCA also identified the person who was shot as 23-year-old Jared Richard Fyle of Duluth.
Officers responded to multiple 911 calls mentioning a physical domestic incident around 9:22 p.m. in an apartment on the 100 block of West First Street.
According to the BCA, officers arriving at the scene indicated that they heard two gunshots and a witness reported hearing loud sounds from inside the apartment. Leibfried then shot into the door, striking Fyle in the shoulder.
Duluth officer shoots suspect in shoulder while responding to domestic incident
Fyle left the apartment and was then brought outside to an ambulance. He was treated at a hospital and released to police custody and booked into the St. Louis County Jail on probable cause domestic assault. Fyle was released on Sunday pending a case review by the St. Louis County Attorney’s Office.
Preliminary BCA investigation shows that no shots were fired from inside the apartment and there were no guns inside, either, although a hatchet was found just inside the door.
No one aside from Fyle was inside the apartment when Leibfried shot at the door. According to the BCA, the alleged victim in the reported domestic incident had left before officers arrived and was uninjured.
The BCA said it will hand over the findings of its investigation to the St. Louis County Attorney’s Office for review.
