UPDATE: BCA identifies man killed in officer-involved shooting in Pine County

UPDATE:

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has identified the man killed during an officer-involved shooting in Pine County as 25-year-old Anthony Michael Legato.

The BCA also identified the deputy who discharged his firearm as Deputy Joshua Pepin with the Pine County Sheriff’s Office. Pepin is currently on standard administrative leave.


The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Pine County, Friday.

According to a release from the BCA, Pine County Sheriff’s deputies were responding to the Grand Casino Hinckley at 1:45 p.m. on the report of a domestic incident.

Deputies saw the suspect’s vehicle while en route and a pursuit began.

The suspect then entered Interstate 35 driving south in the northbound lane before stopping. During the encounter that followed, a deputy fired their weapon, hitting the suspect.

The suspect vehicle then rolled forward and crashed into an oncoming vehicle before coming to a stop in the median.

Deputies provided medical assistance on scene, however, the suspect was pronounced dead.

The driver of the vehicle that was hit was not seriously injured and no officers were injured in the incident.

The BCA will evaluate body camera and squad camera footage of the event during their investigation.

The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office will identify the victim at a later time.
