Two suspects are in custody in connection with a pursuit and standoff that injured two Minneapolis police officers Tuesday night.
According to the Minneapolis Police Department, at around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday officers were investigating felony-level crimes when two stolen vehicles pulled into Mill Ruins Park in downtown Minneapolis that matched the description the officers were looking for.
Officers attempted a traffic stop, and both vehicles fled. One of the vehicles subsequently sideswiped one officer, pinning him against his squad car briefly, then the suspect vehicle brushed against another squad car door, knocking it into a separate officer, police said.
Other squad cars pursued one of the vehicles while the other got away. A Minnesota State Patrol helicopter tracked the vehicle from the air.
The suspect vehicle parked around 18th and Newton avenues north, and the suspects got out and into another stolen vehicle before driving off. According to the department, officers tried pulling that vehicle over, but it fled.
The State Patrol helicopter continued monitoring the suspect vehicle and provided information to officers below. The vehicle eventually pulled over on the 2000 block of Queen Avenue North, and officers saw the occupants getting out and going into a home, police said.
A standoff ensued, and officers set up a perimeter and tried to get the suspects to leave the residence. Police say officers obtained a search warrant just before 1 a.m. Wednesday and were able to enter the home and detain the people inside.
Minneapolis police warn of increase in carjackings, robberies
Six people were detained and interviewed: three males and three females, all of whom are believed to be adults. Police confirmed that two of those people have been arrested.
A release from Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo said the incident happened as investigators were working on crimes plaguing the Third and Fifth precincts. Arradondo added that the suspects are believed to be involved in the uptick in violence in those precincts and, during the course of the investigation, several stolen vehicles have been recovered.
Investigations into those cases continue.
The two injured officers were brought to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and were later released.
