Unusually cloudy January is due to warmer, stagnant air mass

January may not be as sunny as some months, but it's usually not as cloudy as we've seen this year, according to KSTP Chief Meteorologist Dave Dahl.

The Twin Cities have not seen sunshine in over a week, and it's been nearly two weeks since we've had mostly sunny skies.

According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the recent 10 days is the longest streak of cloudy days since October 2018.

With temperatures being elevated so far this January, cloudy skies are expected to continue throughout the workweek in the Twin Cities.

This weekend is the first forecast in which the words "partly cloudy" will be mentioned in quite some time.

The forecast this week looks to be much of the same, with higher than average temperatures and more clouds. There is a chance for a light mix both Thursday and Friday. Sunday is expected to hit a high of 41 degrees.
