Twins to retire Jim Kaat’s number

The Minnesota Twins have announced they will retire number 36 this July.

The number was worn by National Baseball Hall of Fame electee Jim Kaat, who was elected to the Hall of Fame in early December and will be inducted as a member of the Class of 2022.

According to the team, Kaat is the ninth Twin to have his number retired, which will happen during a pregame celebration on Saturday, July 16 before the Twins host the Chicago White Sox.

Kaat came to Minnesota in 1961 after the Washington Senators relocated to the Twin Cities.

In addition to pitching, he also did broadcast work after he retired from playing, and worked regular-season games for both the Yankees and the Twins.

Kaat was also inducted into the Twins Hall of Fame in 2001.

Other Twins players or managers to have had their number retired include:

  • Harmon Killebrew
  • Rod Carew
  • Tony Olivia
  • Kent Hrbek
  • Kirby Puckett
  • Bert Blyleven
