Timberwolves acquiring Beverley for Culver, Hernangomez

After a quiet draft and free agency period, the Minnesota Timberwolves made a trade on Tuesday.

KSTP Sports has confirmed that the Timberwolves are acquiring Patrick Beverley — who was dealt from the Los Angeles Clippers to the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday — in exchange for Jarrett Culver and Juancho Hernangomez. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski first reported the move.

Minnesota gets the toughness and leadership of Beverley for its young, developing roster. Gersson Rosas had Beverley on his team with Rockets and knows what he brings. Memphis continues to add talent along the margins, including Culver, who’s only 22 and a former No. 6 pick.

Culver, the Timberwolves’ No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, struggled in his two seasons in Minnesota, averaging just 7.8 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 20.7 minutes per game. He also shot only 40.6% from the field and 28.8% on three-pointers in his two seasons.

Hernangomez was acquired along with Malik Beasley and Jarred Vanderbilt ahead of the 2019-20 trade deadline. Last season, Hernangomez averaged 7.2 points and 3.9 rebounds over 17.3 minutes per game. After shooting well for Minnesota in 2019-20, he slumped to shooting 43.5% from the field last season and 32.7% from three.

He also was reportedly upset after the Timberwolves held him out of competition for Spain in the Tokyo Olympics after he injured his shoulder.

Beverley, 33, has averaged under 8 points per game the past three seasons but has shot 39% on threes over that time. He’s slated to make $14.3 million this season, the last year of his contract.

He also gives the Timberwolves another guard after the team traded Ricky Rubio to Cleveland last month.

Beverley played for the Houston Rockets when Timberwolves President of Basketball Operations Gersson Rosas was in Houston’s front office.
