Thompson confirms he won’t resign, wife denies abuse allegations

Days after Rep. John Thompson apologized for accusing a St. Paul police officer of racially profiling him during a traffic stop, the freshman lawmaker said he will not leave his seat.

Since Thompson showed a Wisconsin driver’s license during a stop on the Fourth of July, he has faced questions about whether he actually lives in the district or the state he represents.

Thompson is also still facing calls for his resignation after previous allegations of domestic abuse surfaced in the days after that stop.

Monday, Thompson confirmed he will not step down.

"I will share with you one of the greatest quotes I have ever heard in my life: ‘Your life begins to end when you remain silent about the things that matter the most.’ I will not remain silent and I will not be resigning. That’s my only quote," Thompson said.

Thompson’s wife said allegations of abuse are not true.

"I am not now, nor have I ever been an abused woman. I am not a victim of domestic abuse, and I don’t think it’s funny."
