Suspect hospitalized after being shot by deputy in Red Wing

A man is in the hospital after a Goodhue County sheriff’s deputy shot him during an encounter Tuesday afternoon in Red Wing.
According to the Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy spotted a damaged vehicle in a parking lot near Bay Point Park around 1 p.m. A man was walking away from the scene, the sheriff’s office said.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension later determined that the vehicle had crashed in Bay Point Park.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said that “a struggle” between the man and the deputy ensued before the deputy shot the man. Authorities have made no mention of the suspect having a weapon.
The suspect who was shot in the incident is currently hospitalized, but is expected to recover, according to a BCA news release.
The deputy suffered injuries that aren’t considered life-threatening, and is also expected to recover.
Red Wing police and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension are handling the investigation.
The BCA said there is no body camera or squad camera footage of the incident. More information will be released pending further investigation.
