Suspect in fatal Hwy 169 shooting indicted on murder, firearm charges; $3.5M bail set

A man has been indicted on multiple charges stemming from a shooting that killed a youth baseball coach on Highway 169 in Plymouth this summer.

The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office has confirmed with 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS that Jamal Smith has been indicted on the following charges: First-degree murder while committing a drive-by shooting, second-degree murder drive-by shooting, and being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm.

Smith’s bail has been raised to $3.5 million as he remains in custody.

The 33-year-old Chicago man was arrested in Illinois in August.

Youth baseball coach Jay Boughton, 56, was driving home from a baseball game the night of July 6 when he was shot in the head on Highway 169 just south of County Road 9. He was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later. Police say a "traffic altercation," possibly involving a lane change that "escalated quickly," led up to the shooting.

Among the hundreds of tips Plymouth police say they received, one from a metro tow lot led them to the suspect vehicle. The company had impounded an SUV that matched surveillance video sent in a media release.

Last month, Smith was charged with second-degree murder and aiding an offender in connection with the fatal shooting.

Prosecutors also say Smith had pointed guns or brandished them at other drivers in the weeks and months that led up to the shooting.

Smith is set to make a court appearance Friday afternoon.
