Police say a 17-year-old boy died after he was shot early Sunday morning in north Minneapolis.

According to Minneapolis Police Department spokesman John Elder, just before 3 a.m., officers were near the 3200 block of Aldrich Avenue North when they heard multiple gunshots.

North Memorial Health Hospital notified police that a 17-year-old boy had just arrived via private transport. He had been shot and was in "grave" condition.

Police were notified hours later that the boy had died in the hospital.

Elder said investigators believe the boy had gotten into a confrontation that escalated to a shooting and that the suspect had fled the scene before officers arrived. No one is in custody.

Police said they do not believe the shooting was random.

Police also said investigators with the Fourth Precinct are looking into increasing police patrols in that specific area.
