Student arrested after claiming lockdown drill was active shooting on social media
A student was taken into custody by law enforcement Friday after portraying a lockdown drill as an active shooting.
The Pine County Sheriff’s Office said dispatchers were called by staff at Barnum High School at about 2:15 p.m. Friday saying a boy known by students at the school was broadcasting an active shooting incident at another school on social media.
Authorities initially thought the incident involved Willow River School District but then found it was East Central School District.
The sheriff’s office said it determined East Central was doing a lockdown drill and the student sent it to others as if it was an actual event.
Both schools were searched and cleared, and no threat was found to either campus, the sheriff’s office said.
The student was taken into custody and charges will be reviewed by the Pine County Attorney’s Office.
