Stretches of I-94 in St. Paul, I-494 in Bloomington to close this weekend starting late Friday night

CONE ZONE: Two major weekend closures to begin Friday night

Drivers in the Twin Cities and the south metro will experience two major highway closures, starting late Friday night lasting through the weekend.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) will be continuing their work in St. Paul as demolition begins of the Kellogg Boulevard/3rd Street bridge that goes over I-94. In addition, the state says workers will be completing striping work along I-494 in Bloomington.

Closures for both work sites begin at 10 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, and will last through 5 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 9.

Additional details about each of the closures can be found below:

I-94 in St. Paul

Both directions of the interstate will be closed between Highway 52/Lafayette Freeway/East 7th Street and Highway 61/Mounds Boulevard.

In addition, drivers won’t be able to access eastbound I-94 from I-35E or from cross streets in the closed-off area.

Drivers headed west will be able to get off the interstate at Highway 61/Mounds Boulevard, while eastbound drivers can exit at 7th Street and Highway 52/Lafayette Freeway. However, local traffic on Mounds Boulevard can enter both directions of I-94.

The bridge over the interstate will be demolished throughout the weekend, and debris from work will be cleaned up before the highway is reopened. Anyone who lives or works in the area should expect construction noise at all times, including jackhammering and loud trucks.

The following detours will be in place:

  • Eastbound drivers: Head north on I-35E, then east and south on I-694 before re-entering I-94 at the interchange in Woodbury.
  • Westbound drivers: Head north and then east on I-694 before heading south on I-35E to re-enter westbound I-94.

I-494 in Bloomington

In the south metro, MnDOT says westbound and lanes of I-494 will be closed in Bloomington for periods of time this weekend.

Westbound lanes between I-35W and Highway 100 will close starting at 10 p.m. Friday, however, all ramps in that same stretch for westbound traffic will be closed starting at 8 p.m. Those lanes and ramps will be closed through 5 a.m. Monday.

In addition, eastbound lanes of I-494 between Highway 100 and Highway 77 will close starting at 10 p.m. Friday until 10 a.m. Saturday. At that time, crews will open eastbound I-494 between I-35W and Highway 77, but eastbound lanes will stay closed between Highway 100 and I-35W until early Monday.

MnDOT adds ramps along eastbound I-494 between Highway 100 and Highway 77 will close starting at 8 p.m. Friday and stay closed through 10 a.m. Saturday.

Drivers will be able to use northbound I-35W to westbound Highway 62 before heading south on Highway 100 to regain access to I-494 during the first part of the closure. The second detour will have drivers headed north on Highway 100 before using Highway 62 to get to southbound Highway 77 and eastbound I-494.

The state says this weekend closure will not only let crews finish striping work, but it will also allow them to move traffic back to regular lanes for the winter season.
