A 22-year-old man is in custody following a reported assault in St. Paul.

According to the St. Paul Police Department, officers were called to an apartment in the area of Manitoba Avenue West, just east of Rice Street, at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

Officers were called on a report of the 22-year-old man holding a knife to another man’s neck. A witness who made a 911 call reported the 22-year-old man had allegedly strangled the other man until he lost consciousness. A police report indicated the man was the 22-year-old man’s father.

A SWAT unit was called to the scene. Officers encountered the 22-year-old man, who was holding a large knife and reportedly told officers to shoot him, according to police.

Police said chemical irritants and 40 mm less lethal munitions were deployed, and the 22-year-old man was taken into custody at about 3 a.m. Monday.

A warrant was obtained, police said, and officers recovered two knives.

The 22-year-old man was booked into Ramsey County Jail and is being held on threats of violence and domestic assault by strangulation.
