Gov. Tim Walz’s decision to shut down gyms, among other places, is drawing criticism from his political opponents.

It’s also having an impact on the health of individuals who rely on gyms.

Gerard Dols uses the pool at the YMCA on University Avenue five days per week.

Dols said when the state shutdown closed gyms earlier this year he gained weight and his blood pressure went up.

He’s not against a shutdown but feels gyms are safe and shouldn’t be closed.

"They have been very clean," Dols said. "They clean like every hour two hours. Very distant. People are wearing masks. I don’t know why they would have to close the Y where there’s not really an uptick of the virus."

Dols hopes the shutdown doesn’t last long so he can get back into the gym.
