The Dakota County Sheriff’s Office recovered a body late Saturday night from Crystal Lake in Burnsville.

The sheriff’s office identified the victim as 36-year-old Matthew Brust.

Preliminary investigation indicates that Brust and his girlfriend were on a boat when the girlfriend fell into the water. Brust jumped in to help her, and she was able to get back on the boat; however, Brust struggled in the water as the boat drifted away, went underwater and did not resurface.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a possible drowning at 5:45 p.m., and dive teams worked for hours to find Brust before finally recovering him around 11:25 p.m.

“I saw the officers pulled in, two patrol cars, there was just panic,” said Mark Thorson, who was removing weeds from Crystal Lake on Saturday.

“I knew something wasn’t right,” he added.

The sheriff’s office received help from the Burnsville police and fire departments and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

"We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Mr. Brust," Dakota County Sheriff Tim Leslie said in a statement.
