The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office says a suspect in a double homicide committed suicide following a chase early Saturday morning.
Authorities first became aware of the incident when a man called 911 around 1 a.m. asking the sheriff’s office to check on his adult son, who lived at a residence on Eklund Road in Culver Township, north of Brookston.
The father arrived at the home before deputies and found a deceased male outside of the residence. Deputies then found a second deceased male outside of the residence.
A Minnesota State Trooper saw a vehicle moving a few miles away from the scene and attempted a traffic stop, but the driver fled. The sheriff’s office says the driver called 911 during a short pursuit, confessed to the murders, and indicated he wanted to kill himself.
Authorities used a pursuit intervention technique (PIT) near Big Lake Road and Twin Lakes Drive, where the vehicle skidded into the ditch. The sheriff’s office says the driver remained inside the vehicle and shot himself when the vehicle came to rest. He died at the scene.
The names of those involved have not been released because family members are still being notified.
The sheriff’s office said they are not seeking any additional suspects and there is not believed to be any further threat to the public. People who have information on the incident are asked to call 911 or the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office Investigative Division at 218-336-4350.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Crime Scene Team is assisting in the investigation. The Fond du Lac Police Department, Cloquet Police Department, Carlton County Sheriffs Office, and Minnesota State Patrol also assisted.
