Schools throughout the metro get creative to get to the end of the year

School districts in Minnesota are much more accustomed to making plans for a snow day compared to a heat advisory day. But many schools are having to rework their end-of-the-year plans due to the warm temperatures.

In Minneapolis, the district announced Monday afternoon that 15 schools would switch to distance learning through Thursday.

In the Anoka-Hennepin District, there are 11 schools with limited air conditioning. At those buildings, they are allowing for longer mask breaks throughout the day.

At St. Paul Public Schools, about two-thirds of the schools don’t have full air conditioning. At those schools, they are moving in fans and keeping the windows open at night to cool down the building.

A spokesperson said every student has a district-issued water bottle to stay hydrated.

"We’ve got fans available. We’ve got cooling towels available upon request," Kevin Burns with St. Paul Public Schools said. "Everybody has a water bottle and the drinking fountains remain on. We are taking precautions as well as monitoring this day by day in all of our buildings."
