Red Cross assisting dozens after 3-alarm apartment fire in north Minneapolis

At least two people were rescued from balconies after an apartment building caught fire in north Minneapolis on Thursday night.

The Minneapolis Fire Department responded to a reported fire along Plymouth Avenue North near Irving Avenue at around 10 p.m. Crews arrived to find flames coming from the roof of the building.

Firefighters rescued at least two people from balconies and helped evacuate the building.

The fire was upgraded to a three-alarm fire but crews were able to extinguish the flames after about an hour. Firefighters said the building had a fire alarm system but did not have a sprinkler system because it wasn’t required.

Officials said that no firefighters or residents were hurt in the fire.

Meanwhile, the Red Cross is assisting at least 44 people who were displaced by the fire. Firefighters said Friday that roughly 22 apartments are not livable after the fire.

It wasn’t immediately what caused the fire. An investigation is underway.
