Public safety officials say they've had 'tremendous success' with curfew

Monday evening, Department of Corrections Commissioner Paul Schnell, who was speaking on behalf of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, said the implementation of curfews in the metro has been a "tremendous success." 

Monday, it was announced that curfews would be shortened through Tuesday. The new curfew order will last from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday nights.

"We feel the curfew is necessary to continue the stabilization of neighborhoods and the cities," Schnell said.

Schnell said DPS Commissioner John Harrington will meet with law enforcement officials and mayors in the near future to discuss whether curfews should continue to be implemented. Schnell said those officials will assess what is happening in the communities, the calls for service to police departments and whether threats have been made to the community. 

In regards to the National Guard's response, Schnell said they will remain. However, the situation is being evaluated on a day by day basis.

"The governor will direct the reduction further, as this develops, as we get stabilization across the metro area and begin to normalize, ultimately, to a point where normal policing operations are in place," he said.
