Proposed $32.5M Grand Avenue development creating controversy

A plan to bring a five-story development to St. Paul’s Grand Avenue is being met with a mixed response from neighbors.

The $32.5 million mixed-use project would be built at the current location of Dixie’s on Grand.

Supporters believe the new building would bring an economic boost to the street.

"I see both sides of the fence," Brian George, owner of George’s Shoe and Leather Repair said. "For me, it’s bringing more people and if they’re going to be spending money at smaller businesses, I do support that."

Others say it will take away the charm of the historic neighborhood and create street parking issues.

"It’s going to be a monstrosity," neighbor Michael Appleton said. "It’s going to block off people’s views. Additional density is a good thing but too much density is a bad thing."

The developer will send their final plan to the city later this month.

If approved Dixie’s on Grand will close at the end of the year and construction on the new project will begin.
