Police warn of carjackings, burglaries in Third Precinct area

Police in Minneapolis are warning residents of increased carjacking and burglaries they say are occurring in the Third Precinct.

According to the Minneapolis Police Department, a number of juveniles were recently arrested who were believed to be involved in multiple carjacking and purse-snatching incidents that took place in the precinct, as well as across the city.

Police say last week 23 burglaries were also reported in the precinct. The week before that, there were 24 burglaries that were reported.

To prevent carjackings and purse-snatching, the Minneapolis Police Department urges residents to do the following:

  • Be aware of their surroundings
  • Keep their doors locked when inside of vehicles
  • Consider not carrying a backpack or purse
  • Carry limited money

According to police, ways to prevent burglaries include:

  • Keeping exterior doors locked with a deadbolt.
  • Pinning all windows that can be reached from the ground
  • Installing good exterior lighting
  • Consider security cameras
