Tuesday, officers are searching for a suspect they say shot at officers Monday.

According to the St. Paul Police Department, the shooting happened just before 6 p.m. on the 900 block of Algonquin Avenue.

Police said the armed man shot at officers and may have stolen a car in the area right afterward.

At least one officer returned fire, police said.

Officers said the incident began when a woman called police to say someone was digging in the trunk of a car on Algonquin Avenue. Officers found the man who matched the caller’s description and he did not cooperate with police.

Police said the man and two officers got into a physical struggle. The man was able to get away and he fired at officers before fleeing the scene, police said.

"I think we should all be vigilant; I think anytime somebody pulls the trigger in the city of St. Paul, I think it’s concerning," Steve Linders, of the St. Paul Police Department, said. "And we all need to look out for one another. I can tell you that our officers are highly trained, they’re vigilant, and they were looking for each other today. That’s why they’re going home to their families and we’re happy about that."

Meanwhile, not too far from the original scene, police said a woman was carjacked by a man with a gun at the corner of Stillwater Avenue and Hazel Street.

Police are working to determine whether that was the suspect in the original incident.

Police are asking those in the area to call 911 if they see anything, or anyone, suspicious as police continue their search.
