Police: Man shot by officers in Coon Rapids

Authorities in Coon Rapids have confirmed a man was shot by officers Monday afternoon after refusing to put down a gun.

According to a release from the Coon Rapids Police Department, officers were called just before 4 p.m. on the report of a man who "was having mental health issues" and was carrying a gun.

Officers later spotted the man walking on Hanson Boulevard but lost him after he walked into a residential area.

Police say officers located the man again and saw he had a gun in his hand. The officers deployed a "less than lethal" bean bag shotgun, which hit the man, after he refused to put the gun down, according to the department.

After the man was hit, he continued to walk through a wooded area. A few minutes later, officers deployed a second "less than lethal" bean bag shotgun.

According to the department, after the man refused to drop the weapon, two officers fired their service weapons.

Police said the man was taken to Mercy Hospital by ambulance. He was later taken to Hennepin County Medical Center. According to Coon Rapids police, his last known condition was stable.

"Our hope is that this man in crisis is going to recover," the department said in a news release. "He was clearly going through something terrible and needs help. All of our officers respect the sanctity of life and were desperate to avoid discharging their weapons at this scene, but circumstances did not allow for that."

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the shooting.
