Police investigating fatal shooting in Payne-Phalen neighborhood of St. Paul

Police are investigating a fatal shooting that happened Saturday afternoon in the Payne-Phalen neighborhood of St. Paul.

According to the St. Paul Police Department, officers responded to a report of a man being shot around 4 p.m. on the 800 block of Lawson Avenue East.

Police found a man who had been shot in his upper body. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

The victim’s name is being withheld pending positive identification by the Ramsey County medical examiner.

According to Sgt. Mike Ernster, the department’s public information officer, this is the 24th homicide in St. Paul this year.

Police had been called to the address of the shooting about 170 times in 2020 for various complaints, such as property, drug and gun crimes, Ernster said.

Police say they are working to gather evidence and find out what led to the shooting and who might be responsible. Anyone with information Is asked to call 651-266-5650.
