Police identify teen who died in Woodbury crash

Police have identified four of the five 17-year-old boys who were involved in a deadly crash Saturday night in Woodbury.

According to the Woodbury Public Safety Department, Garrett Bumgarner died in the crash. He was ejected from the 2015 Honda Accord after it crashed into a tree around 11 p.m. on Settlers Ridge Parkway near Sundance Way and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Three of the other boys were taken by ambulance to Regions Hospital to be treated for injuries. Police say they are in serious condition but stable.

Josh Edlund, 17, shared a photo he took with Bumgarner and Jack Mears on Friday night after the friends and teammates won their last hockey game of the season. Mears was among those injured in the crash.

"Gary was the first kid at East Ridge who accepted me and was my friend. Same with Jack. They were always there for me, so this really hurts," Edlund said.

Police identified the other surviving passengers as Connor Bro and Andrew McKevitt, but officials have not yet released the name of the driver citing data practices laws.

All five teens involved in the crash are East Ridge High School students, the school confirmed in an email to parents on Monday.

A GoFundMe has been set up for Mears due to his serious but stable condition.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but some neighbors near the scene say they’ve been concerned about conditions of the roadway that could contribute to cars travelling at high speeds.

"There is kind of a slope and a little bit of dip and of course the road goes downhill. My understanding is that some people try and get some air when they come through here," said Jennifer Kearns. "We don’t even feel safe having our children cross this busy road alone,"

Now Kearns is among those hoping this latest crash will prompt a conversation about what can be done to prevent another tragedy.

"And I would love to be a part of that conversation and rally behind the community to see what we can do to hopefully create some change for this intersection and even in this road in general," Kearns said. "My heart breaks for those families of every teenager that was in that car that evening."
