Police: Brooklyn Park standoff ends after suspect dies from self-inflicted gunshot wound, 7-year-old safely released from home
An hours long-standoff and hostage situation involving a 7-year-old boy ended Thursday night in Brooklyn Park after the suspect died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Brooklyn Park Police said officers were called to the 80 block of Sumter Avenue on a report of houses being burglarized at about 3:13 p.m. When they arrived in the 7500 block of 83rd Avenue, officers were flagged down and told that a man was holding a 7-year-old hostage in the bedroom of a house.
Several other children had escaped the house the suspect entered prior to the suspect finding the 7-year-old inside.
Police said the man was armed with several guns but, after negotiations with officers, let the 7-year-old go to safety. The man remained in home.
Police say the suspect later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
