Pilot and 2 family members killed in plane crash in Victoria

A small plane crashed Saturday at 5:40 p.m. in Victoria, killing three people on board, according to an update given by the NTSB.

The family has identified Dr. James Edney as one of the deceased. 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS has confirmed the plane belonged to Edney. 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS has confirmed the two others who died were family members as well but they have not yet been identified.

The plane was headed for Flying Cloud Airport in Eden Prarie from Alexandria Municipal Airport, according to the NTSB.

According to the NSTB, the pilot had contacted air traffic control to start the landing process. He did not send out a distress call before crashing, a spokesperson for NTSB said.

Part of the tail to the plane probably fell off the plane, landing two blocks south of where the plane went down, according to the NTSB spokesperson. Without those parts, a plane becomes uncontrollable, according to the spokesperson.

The plane was a 1992 Mooney M20 which seats four people. According to the NTSB, the age of the plane is normal.

Law enforcement and emergency personnel are at the scene of a deadly plane crash in Victoria, Saturday night.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation reported an "air crash" near Highway 5 and Victoria Drive.

Several law enforcement departments were at the scene.

Debris was also seen near a home.

Law enforcement confirmed multiple people were killed in the crash, adding that there were no survivors, but no specifics were given.

The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed a single-engine Mooney M20 plane crashed into an unoccupied home at 5:40 p.m. after departing from Alexandria Municipal Airport earlier in the day. The plane was headed to Flying Cloud Airport in Eden Prairie when it crashed.

A witness told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS that the plane was headed northeast and making a slow descent when he heard a pop. At that time, one of the plane’s wings appeared to snap off, causing the plane to spiral toward the ground, the witness said.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it’s investigating the crash.

Law enforcement also said Highway 5 will remain closed from County Road 11 South to County Road 11 North overnight and into Sunday.
