Passenger in stolen vehicle killed in St. Paul crash

One person is dead and two others are injured following a crash involving a stolen vehicle Tuesday night in St. Paul.

In an e-mail to 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS, the State Patrol says a trooper spotted the vehicle speeding and discovered it had been stolen on January 3. Authorities said the trooper tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver continued, and also increased speed, starting a chase.

The State Patrol says the chase started at I-94 and Pascal, but ended after the driver crashed at southbound Highway 61 exit ramp to Bailey Road.

The 31-year-old driver and a 35-year-old passenger were taken to Regions Hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Meanwhile, the State Patrol says another passenger—identified as 54-year-old Brenda Schaaf, of Robbinsdale—died.

Authorities add neither Schaaf nor the other passenger were wearing seat belts at the time.

Road conditions were listed as being wet at the time of the crash.

No troopers were injured during the chase, and authorities say the case is still ongoing.
