A church in northeast Minneapolis suffered heavy damage after a fire broke out Monday evening.

According to the Minneapolis Fire Department, firefighters were called just before 7 p.m. to the 2200 block of Fifth Street Northeast on the report of a fire at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish.

Minneapolis Fire Chief Bryan Tyner said there were people still inside of the church when firefighters arrived who were evacuated.

Two aerial ladders were used to extinguish the fire in the building’s structure, roof and bell tower.

Firefighters were able to knock down the fire, however, the roof collapsed.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No injuries were reported.

A GoFundMe was set up to help the church community.
