New Mexico quickly hires former Gophers coach Pitino

Less than 24 hours after the University of Minnesota announced it was moving on from men’s basketball coach Richard Pitino, the coach found a new job.
The University of New Mexico announced Pitino as its new men’s basketball coach Tuesday morning.

Pitino had a 159-137 record and two NCAA Tournament appearances in his eight seasons at Minnesota.
His contract at the U of M called for a $1.75 million buyout but that’s expected to decrease after his hiring at New Mexico.
