There will be a handful of new events for this year’s Winter Carnival in St. Paul.

This year’s carnival will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 26 and will have a “Light Up the Park” event in Rice Park for the first time. To kick off events, organizers have planned a “Countdown to Carnival,” for which attendees will light up glow sticks and hot air balloon pilots will raise flames.

Also new is a lip sync battle starting at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 26 in the Warming House. The event will be held in a tournament style, and finals will be held on Saturday, Feb. 4.

Event officials add the Warming House will be larger and will include music, games, and beverages.

Other events returning this year include ice carving competitions, snow sculpting, the King Boreas Grande Day Parade and the Vulcan Victory Torchlight Parade. There will also be a beard growing competition, an ice fishing contest and the Fire & Ice Run/Walk.
