Minnesotans can now renew driver's licenses online

Minnesotans can now renew driver's licenses online.

The new policy went into effect Wednesday after Gov. Tim Walz signed a bill into law on May 27, waiving the photo and vision screening requirements.

However, there are some restrictions.

In order to renew IDs online, there can't be any name, address, signature or license number change. The license must also currently be valid or have been expired for less than a year to be able to renew it online.

If you're upgrading to a REAL ID or an enhanced license, you'll still need to visit an open deputy registrar to complete the renewal.

The state has automatically extended the expiration of all driver's licenses, ID cards and permits that expire between March 12 and July 31 to now run through Aug. 31.

You can apply online here.
