Minneapolis man pleads guilty to murder in July 2019 shooting

A Minneapolis man has pleaded guilty to intentional second-degree murder in the death of a man at a Minneapolis apartment complex in July 2019.

According to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office, 40-year-old Derrick Blanton entered the guilty plea on Monday.

Blanton is set to receive just over 24 years, or 295 months, in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for next week.

According to a criminial complaint filed at the time, on July 21, 2019, officers responded to an apartment complex along Plymouth Avenue North on a report of a shooting.

Upon arrival, officers found then-37-year-old Gregory Hoskins on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds to the chest.

Surveillance video from the scene obtained by police reportedly showed Blanton running towards Hoskins and firing his gun at him multiple times, then leaving the area.

Blanton is serving another sentence for a separate case concurrently with this case. Blanton was found guilty of first-degree manslaughter in an August 2019 incident.
