Minneapolis man charged in fatal Crystal shooting

A 29-year-old Minneapolis man has been charged in connection to a shooting at Crystal home that killed 26-year-old Maricio Mata-Thelen.

The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office says 29-year-old Angel Villalva has been charged with one count of second-degree unintentional murder and second-degree manslaughter in connection to the shooting.

A criminal complaint says officers with the Crystal Police Department were called at about 9 p.m. on Saturday on the report of a shooting at a home in the 5500 block of Yates Avenue North.

When police arrived at the home, they found Mata-Thelen bleeding on the floor. He was pronounced dead shortly after first responders arrived.

Three men who were inside the house would not tell police anything other than it was an accident.

The complaint said that Villalva later went to the Bloomington Police Department and admitted to killing Mata-Thelen.

According to the complaint, Villalva told police that he had the gun out trying to impress the others that were at the home.

Believing the gun was jammed, Villalva said he removed the gun’s magazine and began banging the gun on the floor and against the walls. He told police the banging may have caused him to pull the trigger, according to the complaint.

However, authorities say the autopsy of Mata-Thelen contradicts Villalva’s story.
