The Minneapolis City Council is considering the mayor’s proposed budget for 2021. One of the most controversial items in the budget: police and public safety.

One 166 residents signed up to make virtual public comments Monday, which went on for about six hours. Some were anxious and angry about the recent spike in crime. Others were calling for the council to make good on its vow to defund the police.

"Two women on my block have been carjacked. I could go on and on. I no longer walk my dog in the neighborhood. I worry about my safety daily. I worry about property values," one resident said.

"The fact really must be stated that police respond after an event occurs. They don’t and won’t keep us safe. The narrative that MPD is understaffed feels really manipulative. You pledged to defund the police, and we are here to hold you accountable," said another resident.

There are two more public input sessions. The final budget hearing is Wednesday, Dec. 9.
