Minneapolis axe-throwing team to compete on world stage

After some tweaks to their practice regime – because of the recent round of COVID-19 restrictions – an axe-throwing team out of Minneapolis feels good about their trip to the world stage.
Based out of Bad Axe Minneapolis, three of its axe-throwers have qualified for the 2020 Signarana World Axe Throwing Championship. Austin Luecke, David Lewis and Dustin Kerr will be making the trip to Atlanta from Dec. 4-6 to throw against the best in the world.
“I just want to represent Minnesota really well, try to do my best for the state and for these guys because they’ve helped me out so much,” said Luecke, who has been throwing the longest out of the three.
Over the last few years, axe-throwing has become more than just a hobby or Saturday-night activity with friends and family. The three say competition is getting more intense.

With the pandemic, this year has proven difficult to practice normally. The team has had to throw at home with their own lanes in the backyard and garage. Bad Axe Minneapolis is currently closed due to the most recent round of coronavirus restrictions.
“If the interior of the Atlanta facility gets to be 45 degrees, we’ll have a distinct advantage over everybody else,” Lewis said. “We have to do things more ‘Rocky IV’ style,” he added.
The guys say organizers have taken steps to host the world championships safely, and the three hope to not only do well but also to help promote the sport. The competition will be aired on ESPN.
