During the aftermath of the civil unrest that damaged parts of the Twin Cities, KSTP introduced you to Stephanie Wilford of Minneapolis.

At the time, Wilford lived very close to the Minneapolis Police Department’s 5th Precinct – an area that was a target of the unrest.

A shopping center Wilford relied on was looted, a Wells Fargo across the street from her apartment was burned down and she was left feeling helpless and defeated.

“These people did this for no reason,” Wilford cried out about the rioters on May 30.

“It’s not (going to) bring George (Floyd) back here, George is in a better place than we are," Wilford added. "And last night and I’m (going to) be honest, I wish I was where George was because this is ridiculous, these people are tearing up our livelihoods."

Within hours, many viewers reached out who wanted to help. A social media post of the interview has been viewed more than 4.5 million times and a GoFundMe account started by one of those viewers eventually raised tens of thousands of dollars.

Almost a year later, Wilford is in a much better place.

"I am so grateful and so happy that they helped me, and you guys helped me out a lot too," Wilford recently told KSTP.

"I didn’t know people would care that much to help me but I just want to thank everybody," Wilford added as she started to tear up.

She’s since moved from Minneapolis and now calls the north metro home. She has better health – something she connects to the move – and is closer to family.

Her message and emotional plea urging rioters to stop the violence had such a reach, Wilford’s favorite actor, Tyler Perry, reached and wanted to help too.

Wilford says Perry is a big reason she’s in her new apartment – one that she says has its own patio and room for her son’s to visit.

"I just want to thank everybody for what they did for me," she said.
