Man pleads guilty to fatally shooting man walking with girlfriend
A man has pleaded guilty to fatally shooting a man he didn't know who was just walking down the street with his girlfriend.
According to the Hennepin County Attorney's Office, Varnell Allen, 23, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder Tuesday morning.
According to a criminal complaint, on Sept. 28 at about 10:20 p.m., 21-year-old Enzo Herrera Garcia was walking along Hennepin Avenue near Eighth Street with his girlfriend. At that time, a silver vehicle driven by Allen pulled up next to them and Allen and another person yelled something at Garcia and his girlfriend.

After Herrera Garcia said something back, Allen stopped the car and he and the passenger started beating Herrera Garcia. Allen then grabbed a gun and fired it at Herrera Garcia, striking him in the back.
The attorney's office said Allen admitted to not knowing Herrera Garcia, but said he shot him intending to kill him, even though he didn't know him.
Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines call for a sentence in the range of 261 months to 367 months in prison.
He's set to be sentenced on April 20.
