A man is dead after a suspected drowning on Lake Minnetonka on Thursday night.

The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office said its Water Patrol unit received a report of a swimmer who’d gone underwater at Commons Beach in Excelsior at about 6 p.m.

Three Water Patrol boats responded along with South Lake Minnetonka Police, Excelsior Fire and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, and a conservation officer saw the swimmer underwater.

According to the sheriff’s office, the conservation officer and a deputy jumped into the water and were able to pull the victim out of the water and into a patrol boat. Lifesaving measures then began until they got to shore and paramedics took over.

The victim was then taken to a hospital, where he later died.

The man’s identity and official cause of death will be released by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office at a later time.

The incident remains under investigation.
