Man dies after Wednesday shooting in downtown Minneapolis

UPDATE: Thursday morning, police said a man hospitalized after a downtown Minneapolis shooting Wednesday night has died.

In the update, police said preliminary information indicates the man was shot while sitting in his vehicle along Seventh Street South near 12th Avenue South.

Police said after the man exited his vehicle and collapsed to the ground, two male suspects approached him and fired more shots before leaving the scene in a separate vehicle.

Police responded shortly afterward, at about 8:40 p.m.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died, according to the update Thursday from police.

Police said the incident marks the 87th homicide in the city this year.

Homicide investigators were added to the team investigating a shooting Wednesday night in downtown Minneapolis, police said.

At 8:40 p.m., Minneapolis police officers responded to a 911 call reporting shots fired along Seventh Street South near 12th Avenue South. Upon arriving, they found a man with an apparent non-life-threatening gunshot wound and rendered medical aid until he was taken to the hospital.

However, shortly after 11 p.m., a spokesperson for MPD said that "the victim’s condition has deteriorated. Homicide investigators have been added to the investigation."

Witnesses in the area of the shooting told police that a dark-colored SUV left the scene at a high rate of speed just after the gunfire.

The incident is under investigation.
