Man charged in killing of Minnesota corrections officer pleads guilty, sentenced to life

A man charged with killing a Stillwater corrections officer in 2018 pleaded guilty Friday and was sentenced to prison.
Court records show Edward Muhammad Johnson pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree murder.

Johnson was also sentenced to life in prison.
According to a criminal complaint, officers and medical personnel responded to a call of a staff assault at the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Stillwater just after 1:30 p.m. on July 18, 2018. Responders found Gomm with substantial injuries to his head and face in the M Shop on the third floor of Building 20. Gomm was taken to a hospital but later died from multiple blunt force injuries to his head and two puncture wounds to his chest.
Johnson is still in prison, having been convicted of the murder of his former girlfriend in 2002.
Gov. Tim Walz released the following statement Friday in response to Johnson’s plea and sentence:
"Today marks another step in the long healing process for those impacted by this senseless act, and it reminds us of the bravery and commitment of all Corrections Officers serving the State of Minnesota. My thoughts are with the family of Joseph Gomm and his colleagues at the Minnesota Correctional Facility-Stillwater."
