Man charged in connection to October Near North shooting

A 23-year-old man has been charged in connection to a fatal shooting that happened in October in Minneapolis’ Near North neighborhood.

A criminal complaint states Brent Buchan faces one count of second-degree murder in connection to the fatal shooting of Joshua Boyce.

The complaint says officers were called just before midnight on Oct. 25 on the report of a ShotSpotter activation in the area of the 1700 block of Emerson Avenue North.

When police arrived in the area, they found Boyce who was bleeding in the doorway of his father’s home. Boyce told police that Buchan had shot him, according to the complaint.

Boyce was taken to the hospital where he later died.

The complaint states Boyce’s father told investigators his son went to see Buchan, who he had been fighting with because Buchan thought he was involved in the murder of Buchan’s friend.

Police arrested Buchan on Monday. The complaint says Buchan denied any contact with Boyce that night. When shown Facebook Messenger conversations between the two with Boyce setting up a meeting for that night, Buchan admitted the messages were his.
