Man arrested for DWI, drug possession after crashing into police car

A man was arrested for drugs-and-alcohol-related offenses after hitting a police car Saturday night, St. Paul police say.

Police say officers responded to a crash between a marked St. Paul Police Department squad car and a BMW at the intersection of Sixth Street East and Sibley Street around 11:50 p.m. Saturday.

The officer was approaching Sibley Street when the BMW driver hit the squad’s passenger side T-bone style, police say.

At the scene, police administered DWI tests and recorded a blood alcohol level of .15.

Police say they first took the driver, a 48-year-old man from St. Paul, to Regions to evaluate his condition and perform a blood draw.

The man was then arrested and taken to the Ramsey County Law Enforcement Center early Sunday morning for gross misdemeanor criminal vehicular operation.

Secondary offenses of marijuana possession, narcotics possession and drug paraphernalia were included in the police report.

Police say the officer was taken to Regions as a precaution but was not hurt.

The incident is still being investigated.
