Law enforcement agencies investigating crash involving stolen vehicle near Cannon Falls

Officials with various law enforcement agencies are investigating an incident that began with a reported child assault and ended with a crash involving a stolen vehicle.

According to the Cannon Falls Police Department, at about 2:16 a.m. Friday, police and deputies with the Goodhue County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call reporting the assault of a child.

Upon arrival, law enforcement officers spoke with the caller who said there had been an argument with another individual over keys to a vehicle when the individual pushed a child.

An officer attempted to stop the suspect, who had gotten into a vehicle and was beginning to drive away.

The officer pursued the suspect, who began driving north on Highway 52. The officer ended the pursuit after losing sight of the vehicle, pulling over behind a semi truck stopped on the shoulder of the highway by County Road 86 to see if the semi had been hit by the suspect vehicle.

The semi driver told the officer the suspect driver had tried exiting at County Road 86, lost control of the vehicle and crossed the entrance lane.

The Minnesota State Patrol and an ambulance responded to the crash scene.

During the investigation of the crash, law enforcement officials learned the suspect vehicle had been stolen in Minneapolis during an armed carjacking on June 17.

The suspect was transported by ambulance with injuries not considered to be life-threatening.

The investigation of the reported child assault and fleeing of the scene will be sent to the Goodhue County Attorney's office for formal charges. The suspect has not yet been named.

The Cannon Falls Police Department is asking for anyone with information on these incidents to call the department at 507-263-2278.
